Avoiding Problems
-
Use the latest version
of CrystalMaker or CrystalDiffract.
We have provided a long-running series
of free incremental program
updates. These include bug fixes - and many
new features!
-
Update your system software.
Apple provides free
incremental updates
which include system bug fixes.
-
Save your work regularly.
-
Take advantage of CrystalMaker's 99 undo levels - in
most cases you can easily recover your work.
-
Perform regular disc maintenance.
Problems can be caused by corrupted system
software or damaged disc blocks.
Make a point of regularly checking your hard disc
using a good diagnostics package
(e.g., Disk First Aid, or Norton Utilities).
When using "Classic" (Mac OS 7.1-9.2):
-
Always ensure that CrystalMaker (and the System)
has sufficient memory; in particular, don't
try to record video in low-memory situations.
- Set your monitor to display thousands
(16-bit) or millions (32-bit) of colours. At lower
colour depths CrystalMaker is forced to use a
custom colour palette, which might interfere with
other applications, control panels, or extensions.

If Problems Still Occur
-
Isolate the cause of your problem: can you
be sure it is unique to CrystalMaker, or are other
programs also showing problems?
- Try running CrystalMaker on another
machine, to see if you can reproduce the problem. If
not, there may be an issue with your machine's
specific software/hardware.
-
Try deleting the CrystalMaker Preferences file: this
will reset program settings to default values.
On Mac OS X, the preferences file has the
file path:
/Users/(you)/Library/Preferences/CrystalMaker Preferences
On Classic, the CrystalMaker preferences file is located
inside the Preferences folder inside the System Folder.
-
Use a disc-checking program (e.g., Apple Disk First Aid,
or Norton Utilities) to thoroughly check your hard drive
for possible corruption.
-
Do a clean install of your system software (this can
get corrupted over a period of time, resulting in
instability and frequent system freezes).
When using "Classic" (Mac OS 7.1-9.2):
-
Increase CrystalMaker's memory
allocation. Remember to leave enough free memory
for the System (extra memory is needed when you
record QuickTime video, print, or copy graphics)
-
Eliminate conflicts with rogue extensions or control panels.
Use the Extensions Manager control panel (System 7.6; MacOS8)
to turn off non-essential control panels/extensions.
